The College for Seniors Performing Arts Curriculum Committee collaborates with the Brevard Music Festival in studying three operas: Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, Charles Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, and Johann Strauss Jr’s Die Fledermaus. Sessions 1, 3 and 5 will be presented in the usual way of past Met at the Movies courses, with opening discussion by the instructor Pat Heuermann followed by a DVD playing of one of the operas. Sessions 2, 4 and 6 will include live performances by the young artists of the Janiac Opera at Brevard performing parts of these three operas as well as other musical selections. A period of questions and answers with the Janiac performers will follow these performances. The June 18, July 2 and 16 performance sessions by members of the Janiac Opera of Brevard will be held from 4-5 p.m. and are open to all OLLI members and to UNC Asheville students and faculty.
