Craft in Western North Carolina: From Functional to Artistic

Deepen your knowledge and appreciation of the long tradition of craft in WNC. We will first have an overview and introduction to the tradition and impact of the Cherokees, Scots/Irish and Biltmore on craft. For the next five weeks, we'll visit artisans from a particular medium with different perspectives: one traditional and one expressive. Class participants must be able to travel to different studios, walk and stand for the majority of class time. Parking fees may be required at some locations. List of studios and artists: TBA

You may know Karen Depew ( as an instructor and poet, but for the past 12 years she and her husband have been collectors of sSherry Masterstudio craft and active in supporting the community of artisans. In her collection are works by local artists Stoney Lamarr (wood), Jeannine Marchand (ceramics) and Barbara Zaretsky (fiber). Studio craft was a major reason for choosing to live in Asheville. Sherry Masters ( is a native of the Asheville area with 30 years of experience working as a local gallery manager and craft tourism advocate.
