Come learn a little history of the mountain dulcimer and how to play some simple tunes from a variety of genres. We will cover equipment, strumming, fretting and tuning your instrument, chords for accompanying others, timing and rhythm as it applies to the dulcimer. No previous music experience is required. If you do not yet have a dulcimer, let the instructor know, as she has several available for loan. Prerequisite: Participants should have the strength and ability to use multiple fingers on both hands. 

Course Outline

Melanie Johnston (melmack2@gmail.com), founder of the Northeast Dulcimer Orchestra and Connecticut Mountain Dulcimer Gathering, has taught dulcimer classes and courses in New York, Vermont, Connecticut and North Carolina. She holds a mountain dulcimer teaching certificate from Western Carolina University. Melanie will be assisted by her husband, Mack Johnston, who plays mandolin, guitar and dulcimer.
