National Parks 1: Geology Behind the Scenery

Did you ever wonder what geologic forces created waterfalls and landforms of Yosemite, geothermal activity in Yellowstone or scenery of parks such as Arches and Shenandoah? What earth history is recorded in the Grand Canyon? We will explore these and other questions in a tour of the geology behind the scenery of the U.S. National Parks. No prior science background is required. NOTE: No Class Session on April 11. We will take an optional field trip on a Saturday morning. This course was originally taught in the Fall 2016 term.

Course outline

Richard Wiener ( has a doctorate in geology with 30 years of technical geoscience experience at ExxonMobil. He has taught geology courses at College for Seniors for five years and previously taught at SUNY Oneonta. Rich has numerous geologic publications to his credit.
