People entering the Reuter Center for the first time often comment on the vibrant energy they encounter among the members they talk to and the dozens of “Center happenings” offered on any given day. Classes, hikes, lectures, parties, special interest groups, leadership programs, service projects, and more, contribute to that vibrant energy. Behind-the-scenes, OLLI volunteers—members like you—are collaborating and creating those offerings, which brings them great satisfaction and a sense of community.
Active members are the creative lifeblood of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. They are involved in every aspect of OLLI operations and programming. An average of over 400 enthusiastic volunteers work with seven staff members to bring OLLI classes, lectures, events, and programs to you. We are always looking for fresh ideas, talents and skills.
Want to help out every once in awhile, when you have an hour or two available? Become an event volunteer. Want to plan quarterly events with a minimum meeting-time commitment? Join a party planning committee. Looking for a way to connect with members on an ongoing basis, using your talent and expertise to work on anything from OLLI finances to program development to strategic planning? OLLI has dozens of committees that match any area of interest.
Ways to get involved at OLLI at UNC Asheville
- Class Reps: College for Seniors instructors need a little help from members who are enrolled in their classes. Class Reps take attendance, distribute class announcements and class materials, and lend a helping hand when requested. Be a class rep for any class in which you are enrolled, any term.
- Teach a College for Seniors class, give a Fab Friday lunchtime lecture, introduce a new program idea. Are you passionate about a certain topic or hobby? Share your knowledge and experience with other OLLI members!
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs): these groups meet weekly or monthly to explore interests such as bowling, wine tasting, meditation, genealogy, bridge, hiking, and more. This is a great way to meet people and socialize with other members.
